Prairieland Adaptive is a new, grassroots nonprofit organization founded in 2024 by Cody Birely, a local physical therapist specializing in neurologic rehabilitation, to address the significant need for adaptive resources in Central Illinois. Many of his patients discharge from outpatient neurologic rehabilitation with limited places to continue their journey with community reintegration and getting back to the things they loved to do before their injury. Recognizing this need for individuals with disabilities to participate in sports, recreation, and fitness, Prairieland Adaptive aims to bridge this gap by providing, supporting, and connecting opportunities to adaptive programs for individuals with disabilities to obtain optimal health and wellness and enhance quality of life.
Over the past six months, the organization has focused on establishing its foundational legal framework, networking with community members, and building partnerships. Prairieland Adaptive is planning to launch its first adaptive fitness program, Adapt and Get Fit!, in summer/fall of 2025, with the vision of creating an inclusive and accessible environment that meets the evolving needs of the local disability community.
